It Is Important to Schedule a Dental Appointment Postpartum Too

It Is Important to Schedule a Dental Appointment Postpartum TooWhile pregnant, the entire body changes and shifts to accommodate the growing baby. This means that different parts of the body that were once in one place, now move around. Did you know that this can happen to your teeth as well?

Once the baby is born, you should notice that many of these changes reverse themselves. However, that is not always the case. One thing you need to do once you feel as though you are recovered is come in and see us. We should look around your mouth to make sure everything is back in place where it should be.

Things That Commonly Happen During Pregnancy

When you are pregnant, your mouth changes. Some of the changes are due to the differences in hormones, while other changes are just your body's way of accommodating the pregnancy. Here are some of the issues you could face while pregnant that we need to check on after the birth of your baby.

•  Oral lesions. This is when you have a lesion in your mouth, and it is typically the result of increased gastric acid. This can erode the enamel of your teeth and leave your mouth with painful sores.
•  Teeth that move. During your pregnancy, some of your teeth may become looser in their sockets as a result of the hormones you are secreting. This can leave your teeth shifting around more than normal. We want to check out your teeth after the baby is born to make sure your teeth have gone back to the right spot.
•  Gum disease. You are more susceptible to gum disease while pregnant. While solid oral hygiene routines help, you may still develop gum disease. We need to go through and check out your mouth to make sure it is resolving itself once you deliver.

If you want to find out more about how to take care of your mouth following a pregnancy, please reach out to our office. We can help!
